Internet FAQs

Yes.  You may use your own modem and/or wireless router to access your MetroCast Internet service.  For a list of modems that you may purchase from third-party retailers that are compatible with MetroCast Internet services, click here.

MetroCast provides market-leading Internet speeds, with residential download speeds up to 150 Mbps (105 Mbps in parts of Virginia), far surpassing the national average.  This allows you to stream TV shows and HD movies, download, post and shop--instantly.  You can also save on your smartphone and tablet data plans with our Home WiFi service.  Plus, enjoy MetroCast Internet outside your home with free WiFi hotspots.

MetroCast supports the use of DOCSIS 2.0 and 3.0 modems and non-complying modems will not operate within our network’s performance standards.  As of October 1, 2016, a DOCSIS 3.0 modem is required for all new MetroCast Internet subscribers.  A DOCSIS 3.0 modem is necessary to receive the fastest speeds for the High Speed Turbo and High Speed Ultra tiers.

In addition to the upfront cost of purchasing a modem, many customers prefer to rent their modem from MetroCast in order to ensure that their equipment stays current and remains compatible with MetroCast-provided service. In addition, customers who rent modems from MetroCast receive new software versions and firmware updates that are provided by MetroCast to enhance modem performance.  Finally, our customers have peace of mind knowing that we will support the MetroCast-issued equipment and will not charge a service fee should there ever be the need to replace or repair it.
